Terrafugia TF-X Design and Specs

The design of the TF-X flying car is based on the Transition model being developed by Terrafugia. TF-X was built using lightweight materials and will be able to carry four people in comfort like a car. This flying car will be able to run on roads and highways, and can be easily placed in a standard single car garage.

Terrafugia TF-X will be equipped with retractable wings and electric-powered rotors mounted on folded wingtips. The TF-X flying car will operate as a VTOL aircraft that takes off and lands from / on runways, land strips and highways. This requires a clear 100 ft diameter zone to take off and land. It will also feature a retractable landing gear system.

The operator needs to select the main target landing zone and the backup landing zone before departure. Flying cars can land in approved landing zones but departures will not be permitted until the appropriate landing zones are selected, in the case of a temporarily restricted airspace (TFR). The TF-X flying car will be equipped with a full backup parachute vehicle system which can be activated by the operator in the event of an emergency or mechanical damage.

The TF-X flying car is equipped with an automatic departure and landing permit system. If there is not enough energy in the car to carry out last-minute abortions at the first two locations, the system safely navigates to the third location in the 30-minute reserve for landing. TF-X landings in unapproved landing zones will be permitted during an emergency situation.

Terrafugia TF-X Flying Car Specs

Terrafugia TF-X Engine and Performance

Terrafugia TF-X will be powered by two gas turbine engines, each of which is capable of producing 300 hp power output. The engine will drive the rear mounted propeller when the car is flying. The battery can be recharged either from the engine or by connecting it to the electric car charging station. The TF-X flying car will be able to go at a maximum speed of 322 km / h and will have a non-stop flight range of more than 800 km.

Terrafugia TF-X Cockpit and Avionics

The cockpit of the TF-X flying car will be equipped with an advanced system and fly-by-wire control. This system will offer increased safety, simplicity and comfort for private flights. It will be able to automatically avoid other air traffic, bad weather, and limited and controlled airspace of the tower.

Terrafugia TF-X will be able to take off, fly and land independently. Operators can fly it manually without much effort. TF-X can make an automatic landing at an approved landing location within the agreed weather limit. This will include satellite transponders to send the right location to a centralized air traffic management system.

Terrafugia TF-X Price

Terrafugia has previously launched the first model of the TF-X flying car at a price of US $ 279,000. But this flying car is still in development and completing several other flight tests.
