Aston Martin Launched Volante Vision Concept, A New VTOL Hybrid Autonomous Aircraft
aircraftconcept.com – Aston Martin, a UK-based sports car manufacturer, has launched the latest luxury Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) lightweight airplane concept called the Volante Vision Concept. Named after the Italian word for flight, Volante was introduced on July 16, 2018 at the Farnborough Air Show, along with other aircraft designs including the concept of the Boeing Hypersonic aircraft. The concept of private mobility aircraft is designed to offer a convenient way for people to make their daily commute free from traffic in urban areas.
The development of the Volante Vision Concept was carried out by Aston Martin in collaboration with Cranfield University, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, and Rolls-Royce. The collaboration involves the development of autonomous-flying hybrid electric vehicles for air travel in urban areas and inter-city transportation in a fast, efficient, and congestion-free way.
The Volante Vision Concept will be able to accommodate up to three passengers with a self-piloting aircraft mechanism. The aircraft will be powered by an electric-hybrid engine with a three-propeller drive system, one large horizontal propeller at the rear, and two oblique propellers at the front. The aircraft will have the ability to take off and land vertically, so that it can land above the building, without the need for a runway.
The company has not released further technical details or specifications. However, Aston Martin President and CEO Dr. Andy Palmer optimistically revealed that vertical mobility is no longer a delusion, Aston Martin is at the forefront of developing a new generation of urban transportation. It will feature the latest aerospace solutions, electrification, and autonomous technology.
